A car of mass 1000 kg travels at 15 m/s. Calculate its kinetic energy.

Acceptable Answer

KE = ½mv² = ½ × 1000 × 15² = ½ × 1000 × 225 = 112,500 J = 112.5 kJ

Question 22 marks

A force of 500N acts on an object of mass 50kg. Calculate the acceleration.

Acceptable Answer

F = ma → a = F/m = 500/50 = 10 m/s²

Question 33 marks

Explain why a parachutist reaches terminal velocity.

Acceptable Answer

When jumping, weight > air resistance so the parachutist accelerates. As speed increases, air resistance increases. Eventually air resistance = weight, resultant force = 0, so acceleration = 0. The parachutist falls at constant speed (terminal velocity).

Question 52 marks

A 6V battery is connected to two 3Ω resistors in series. Calculate the current.

Acceptable Answer

Total R = 3 + 3 = 6Ω. I = V/R = 6/6 = 1A

Question 63 marks

Explain why the live wire in a plug is dangerous.

Acceptable Answer

The live wire carries alternating current at 230V (high voltage). If touched, current flows through the body to earth, which can cause electrocution. It is dangerous even when an appliance is switched off, as the live wire is always at high voltage.
